A practical weekend in Cancun

Friday arrival

Cancun International Airport is 14 miles from the Hotel Zone. You can pre-book your transportation through Amstar DMC, or use the free 24-hour shuttle if you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Cancun Airport. For your first dinner, head to Taquería Los Chachalacos in the Hotel Zone for tacos al pastor.

Saturday activities

Start your morning at the El Rey ruins, which are located by the beach opposite Playa Delfines and cost 60 MXN to enter. While you are there, visit the Playa Delfines lookout terrace to see the colorful Cancun sign. You can also explore exhibits on Mayan history and art at the Museo Maya de Cancun. To finish the day, take a ferry from one of the three terminals in the Hotel Zone to Isla Mujeres. Once there, you can visit the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), which features over 500 sculptures.

Sunday exploring

Use taxis or local buses to travel from the Hotel Zone to downtown Cancun. Spend some time at Mercado 28, where you can find artisan stalls selling handmade souvenirs. For lunch, visit Mercado 23 to eat authentic tortas (Mexican sandwiches), tacos, or quesadillas. End your trip at Parque de las Palapas, a lively plaza known for music and snacks such as churros, marquesitas, tamales, and esquites.

Packing list

You should pack sun protection including sunscreen, hats, polarized sunglasses, and rashguard clothing. For the beach, bring a waterproof phone case, a waterproof fanny pack, and sand-proof towels with hidden pockets.
