Timing your trip
The overall foliage season runs from late September through early November. Because of the elevation changes, the peak color happens in waves rather than all at once.
If you want to see high elevations above 5,000 feet, plan for late September to early October. Mid-elevation areas between 3,000 and 5,000 feet typically peak in early to mid-October. For downtown Asheville and lower elevations below 3,000 feet, the most brilliant colors appear from mid to late October, specifically between October 18 and October 31. The general peak window for the broader Asheville area is typically October 10 to October 25.
Visiting the Biltmore Estate
You should set aside at least a half-day for the Biltmore Estate. The property covers 8,000 acres. Your visit can include the house tour, the gardens, and Antler Hill Village and Winery. While exploring the gardens, look for the Japanese Katsura tree (its buttery yellow leaves smell like cotton candy).
Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway
Driving from Asheville toward Craggy Gardens or Mount Pisgah takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes in each direction. If you head north to Craggy Gardens at Milepost 364, you will find high elevation foliage including birch, mountain ash, and blueberry bushes. For a trip south, Graveyard Fields is located 30 minutes from the city and typically peaks during the first week of October.
Exploring downtown and the river
The city sits at an elevation of 2,134 feet. In town, you can walk the French Broad River Greenway to see fall colors reflecting in the water. If you want to get slightly outside the center, Swannanoa is located approximately 15 minutes from downtown Asheville.
Logistics and booking
You need to plan your bookings well in advance for October dates. For groups of 8 to 10 people, a cabin rental with 4 to 5 bedrooms generally costs between $400 and $900 per night during the fall. During peak weekends in the second and third weeks of October, these prices can reach $1,200 per night. You should book your accommodation by mid-July for these dates. Additionally, Biltmore Estate tickets often sell out 8 weeks in advance for fall weekends.
