An introduction

Beijing is one of China's Four Great Ancient Capitals. It has over 3,000 years of city-building history and has served as a capital for more than 800 years.

City layout

The city covers 16,410 square kilometres. If you arrive on Friday evening, it helps to understand that the city is divided into seven rough areas. These include Tiananmen (the Central Axis), Shichahai (South Luogu Lane), Three Hills and Five Gardens (Summer Palace and Peking University), Xidan (Sanlitun and Wangfujing), Olympic Park (National Stadium and Forest Park), the 798 area, and the Great Wall outskirts.

Imperial sights

Start Saturday morning at the Forbidden City [outline]. You must book tickets via the WeChat mini-program 故宫博物院 exactly 10 days in advance at 8:00 AM Beijing time. Be aware that the site is closed every Monday. A realistic duration for visiting the interior is four hours. While there, you can visit the Meridian Gate, Hall of Supreme Harmony, Palace of Heavenly Purity, and the Treasure Gallery, where you will find the jadeite cabbage.

Local flavors and views

For lunch, head to Siji Minfu (Peking Chamber), which is located a few minutes from the East Gate of the Forbidden City. A local tip for eating Peking duck here is to eat the skin with white sugar. If you explore near Yandai Xiejie, look for old Beijing-style yogurt and tangyou bing (a crispy, sticky-sweet doughnut). Afterward, you can visit Jingshan Park, which is located at the north gate of the Forbidden City.

Outskirts exploration

On Sunday morning, you have options for excursions outside the center. The Summer Palace is located 15 to 50 km from the city center. If you prefer the Great Wall, sections such as Mutianyu, Badaling, Jinshanling, and Simatai are located 70 to 130 km outside the city. Gubei Water Town is specifically 130 km away.

Modern art and culture

Spend Sunday afternoon exploring the 798 Art District [S4, S5]. Other attractions you might consider include the Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple (Yonghe), National Museum of China, or Universal Studios Beijing.

Essential logistics

Plan your transport carefully. A trip that appears as 20 minutes on Google Maps can take 90 minutes during Beijing rush hour. Additionally, remember that the ticket release window for major sites is strict and requires advance booking via WeChat.
