Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province. It has been a major maritime terminus for over 2200 years and is one of China's three largest cities. Known as China's wholesale and import-export capital, it is ranked as an Alpha global city.

When to go

The best time for your visit depends on your preference for weather and budget. Autumn (October and November) is the busiest season, featuring warm temperatures and very little rain. If you are looking for discounted prices, winter (December to February) is a good option, though it features colder weather and very little rain. Summer (May to September) is exceptionally long with warm weather and significant rainfall. Spring (February to May) offers mild weather, but you will encounter many cloudy and misty days.

Friday evening

You can stay at Hotel Indigo Guangzhou Haixinsha. Spend your first evening at Huacheng Square, a vast open plaza where you can find free access to illuminated fountains. This location provides views of the Guangdong Museum, the Guangzhou International Finance Center, and the Canton Tower. The tower is 600 meters tall and is illuminated in changing colors at night.

Saturday morning

Start your day with dim sum at DimDouDum, which is a popular restaurant for this experience. Afterward, visit the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall to see traditional Lingnan architecture known for its courtyards and intricate carvings. You should also visit the Six Banyan Trees Temple, a Buddhist site dating back to the 6th century that features a pagoda.

Saturday afternoon

Walk through Shamian Island, a former 19th century foreign concession area featuring European-style architecture and colonial buildings. Later, head to Beijing Road Shopping Street in central Guangzhou. In addition to modern retail and local snacks, you can see ancient road ruins preserved under glass panels.

Sunday morning

To get a view of the city, take the cable car up White Cloud Mountain. Alternatively, you can visit Yuexiu Park, which is the largest park in downtown Guangzhou and contains the Five Rams Sculpture.

Sunday afternoon

Visit the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to see its surrounding gardens and magnificent dome. For shopping, you have a few options depending on your style. You can explore Dongshankou for cozy cafes, historic villas, and indie boutiques, or visit the Tianhe Underground Mall for street food, beauty products, electronics, and affordable fashion.

Local flavors

Cantonese cuisine is a primary part of the experience here. You should try wonton noodles and char siu (barbecue pork). For dessert, look for mango pudding and egg tarts.
