A weekend in Ahmedabad

Friday evening arrival

Ahmedabad is located in the state of Gujarat in western India along the Sabarmati River. The city was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah and now has a population of over 8 million people. When you arrive, you will notice that the Sabarmati River divides the city into two distinct parts. The eastern side contains the historic Old City with its heritage structures and narrow lanes, while the western side is home to upscale residential areas, shopping malls, and modern commercial hubs.

You can spend your first evening at the Sabarmati Riverfront Project. This development has turned the riverbanks into recreational spaces where you can use the promenades, visit public parks, or take boat rides.

Saturday in the old city

Spend your Saturday exploring the Old City, which is described as a UNESCO World Heritage Center and was recognized as India's first UNESCO World Heritage City in 2017. The best way to experience this area is by walking through its narrow lanes. While you are there, visit the Juma Masjid and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque.

Sunday from ashram to motera

Start your Sunday morning at Sabarmati Ashram, which served as the former residence of Mahatma Gandhi. Entry is free, and the site is open daily from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Afterward, take a 15 minute drive to visit the Patang Kite Museum. This museum was designed by Le Corbusier in 1954 and offers free entry. Note that it is closed on Mondays and operates from 10 am to 6 pm (with a break between 12 pm and 4 pm).

Finish your weekend with a trip to Motera to see the Narendra Modi Stadium. Located within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex, it is currently the largest cricket stadium in the world.

Transport and logistics

To navigate the city, you can use the Ahmedabad Metro. For more direct travel, you can hire an Uber or Ola, or rent licensed cars. If you are traveling from Mumbai, round-trip flight tickets typically cost between INR 5,000 and 6,000.
