Riviera Maya travel guide: from Cancun to Tulum
Understanding the geography
The Riviera Maya covers approximately 80 miles between Cancun and Tulum. The region extends from the south of Cancun near Puerto Morelos to Tulum, ending at Punta Allen within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. If you are looking for a central base, Puerto Morelos is located 35 minutes from either Playa del Carmen or Cancun.

To explore the edge of the region, drive 20 minutes south of Tulum Pueblo. This takes you to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, where you can visit the Muyil Ruins and travel toward Punta Allen.
