Weekend guide
If you are staying in the Nanshan district, mid-range accommodation options include the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Nanshan or ibis Shenzhen Houhai.
Arrival and evening activities
If you are staying in the Nanshan district, mid-range accommodation options include the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Nanshan or ibis Shenzhen Houhai. For those on a budget, Capsule & Co is available near the Houhai metro. You can spend your first evening at Shekou Sea World, an atmospheric district centered around the MS Minghua ship. For dinner, try local staples such as steamed garoupa or typhoon-shelter crab at Yugang Seafood. To finish the night, you can find local craft beer at Bionic Brew or Arrow Factory Taproom.
Local culture and art
Start your Saturday at Nantou Ancient City, a walled settlement that has survived for 1,700 years and was recently restored by the architect firm Urbanus. Entry to the city is free. From there, you can take a 20 minute taxi ride to Dafen Oil Painting Village, one of the world's largest art reproduction hubs. While browsing is free, paintings start at $15, and custom portraits take 3 to 5 days to complete. Later, visit the OCT Loft Creative Culture Park, a repurposed factory complex in the Nanshan tech corridor featuring galleries and design studios. Entry is free, but you should budget between $5 and $10 for coffee and browsing.
Coastal exploration
For Sunday, head to the eastern edge of the city to visit the Dapeng Peninsula. You can take a direct DiDi for approximately 105 RMB one-way, which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can use the Shenzhen Metro from Lo Wu to Line 8 (The Coastal Line) to Dameisha Station and then use a DiDi for the final leg to avoid highway traffic. At Yunhai Angel Bay, you can ride vintage capsule trains along the cliffside over the ocean. Tickets cost 15 RMB one-way or 25 RMB round-trip and are available via Alipay or WeChat at the upper booth. While there, you can visit a natural garden with goats and alpacas, a soft-sand beach for water sports, and a seaside restaurant. Use the Shell Bay Resort Area as your base camp to keep transit times to dinner and the boardwalk under 10 minutes.
Budget and logistics
Plan for a daily budget of $60 to $120. You should add a 10 to 20 percent buffer to this estimate for spontaneous activities or souvenirs. The best window for travel is from October to March due to the cool weather and low humidity, but you should avoid July and September because of typhoon season. To get around, use a Shenzhen Tong card (which is compatible with Octopus) at metro stations to skip ticket lines. Metro rides typically cost between ¥2 and ¥10.
