Where to Stay in Ubud: A Neighborhood Guide

Pick the right base to avoid the crowds and find the best views.

TravelMe Editorial·Reviewed by Ryan Thayer

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, but where you stay determines if your trip is relaxing or stressful. The town is walkable in the center, but once you move toward the outskirts, you will need a scooter or a car. To get here, you will land at Ngurah Rai International (DPS), which is 35 km south of Ubud. The drive takes about 1.5 hours, and a Blue Bird taxi costs roughly $30 to $35.

Central Ubud

Central Ubud is the "Times Square" of the region. It is the most convenient area because you can walk to the Ubud Art Market & Gallery and the Saraswati Temple. However, the narrow streets are often crowded with tourists and traffic. You should skip this area if you are looking for a quiet retreat.

Who it suits: First-time visitors who want to be within walking distance of shops and galleries. Who should avoid it: Travelers who hate noise and crowds. Walk-time to sights: 5 to 15 minutes to the main market and temples.

Accommodation Options:

  • $30 to $55 per night at Madu Guest House (Budget).
  • $45 to $70 per night at Puri Garden Hotel & Resort (Budget).
  • $150 to $200 per night at Katamama Ubud (Mid-range).

Campuhan

Campuhan is located just east of the center. It offers a more relaxed vibe with a riverside feel. It is the best choice for those who want to be close to the action but prefer to wake up to a quieter environment.

Who it suits: Couples and slow travelers. Who should avoid it: People who want to be in the middle of the nightlife. Walk-time to sights: 10 to 20 minutes to the center, but immediate access to the Campuhan Ridge Walk.

Accommodation Option:

  • $130 to $180 per night at Hujan Locale (Mid-range).

Tegallalang

Tegallalang is located on the outskirts of town. This area is dominated by the famous stepped rice paddies. Staying here means you are trading walkability for high-end luxury and jungle views. You will need a car to get into the town center for dinner or shopping.

Who it suits: Luxury travelers and nature lovers. Who should avoid it: Budget travelers or those who do not want to rely on taxis. Walk-time to sights: Immediate access to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, but a 20 to 30 minute drive to Central Ubud.

Accommodation Options:

  • $350 to $500 per night at Alila Ubud (Luxury).
  • $600 to $800 per night at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan (Luxury).

Sidemen Valley

Sidemen Valley is not in Ubud proper, but it is a viable alternative for those who find the main town too touristy. It is located about 1.5 hours east of Ubud.

Who it suits: Travelers wanting a remote, off-grid experience. Who should avoid it: People who want to visit the Monkey Forest or the Art Market daily. Accommodation: Simple bamboo cottages for around $70 per night.

Planning Your Visit

You should plan your trip for May to June or September to October. During these months, the weather is dry and the humidity is lower. Temperatures typically range from 24 to 32°C (75 to 90°F).

If you stay in the center, you can easily visit the Ubud Monkey Forest ($5 entry) or the Saraswati Temple (Free). For those staying in Tegallalang, the Tegalalang Rice Terraces cost about $5 for entry and $2 for parking. If you have extra time, Tirta Empul is a 30 minute drive from the center.

The Final Takeaway

Do not make the mistake of staying in the dead center of Ubud if you are seeking "zen." The noise of scooters and the crowds at the Ubud Art Market can be draining. For the best balance of convenience and peace, book a place in Campuhan. You get the luxury of the riverside and the ridge walk, but you can still walk into town for a plate of babi guling at Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka for $8.
