Chengdu

Everything you need to know before you go.

01Overview

Chengdu is much slower than Beijing or Shanghai. It is a city for people who appreciate a lazy afternoon and heavy spice. The vibe is centered around tea culture and a general refusal to rush. Start your trip at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to see the pandas. Afterward, visit Wenshu Monastery for a quiet experience away from the main crowds.

For shopping and modern architecture, head to Taikoo Li. It is a high-end area that blends old temples with luxury stores. If you want something more traditional, walk through Kuanzhai Alleys, though it is very touristy. For a more local feel, explore the streets around Chunxi Road.

The food is the real draw here. You cannot leave without eating Mapo Tofu and a spicy Sichuan hot pot. Street snacks like spicy rabbit or noodles cost between $3 and $8. A standard sit-down dinner usually costs $10 to $20 per person. High-end hot pot restaurants will cost you $30 to $60 per person.

04Getting There

Fly into Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) or Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU). Most international flights now land at TFU. From major US hubs like LAX, JFK, or SFO, expect to pay between $1,300 and $1,900 for a round trip.

TFU is far from the city. Take Metro Line 18 for about $3. It takes roughly one hour to reach the center. A taxi or Didi will cost $50 to $70 and take about 90 minutes. CTU is much closer. A taxi there costs $15 to $25 and takes 30 minutes. The metro from CTU is about $2 and takes 40 minutes.

If you are coming from nearby cities, the high speed train is the best bet. From Chongqing, the trip takes about 90 minutes and costs around $30. Driving from Chongqing takes 4 to 5 hours.

Stay in the Yulin neighborhood if you want a local feel with small bars and cafes. For shopping and hotels, stick to the area around Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li.

Eat Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan Noodles. A bowl of street noodles usually costs $2 to $5. For a proper Sichuan hot pot dinner, expect to pay $20 to $40 per person.

Visit the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. Get there by 7:30 AM to beat the crowds. Walk through Kuanzhai Alley to see the old architecture, but avoid the overpriced restaurants on the main strip. Visit Wenshu Monastery for a quieter experience and cheap tea.

05Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to May) Temperatures range from 50 to 72°F. This is a peak period, especially April and May. The weather is mild and the city is green. You will see crowds at the Giant Panda Research Base, but it is the best time to see the pandas active before the heat hits.

Summer (June to August) Temperatures range from 77 to 95°F with high humidity. Avoid these months. It is oppressive, rainy, and the heat makes walking through neighborhoods like Chunxi Road miserable. You will spend all your time in air conditioning.

Autumn (September to November) Temperatures range from 54 to 68°F. This is the sweet spot. September and November offer crisp air and clear skies. Avoid the first week of October due to the National Day holiday. Hotels spike in price and landmarks become overcrowded.

Winter (December to February) Temperatures range from 37 to 54°F. It is gray and damp, but this is the cheapest time to visit. If you can handle the chill, you can find great deals on mid-range hotels in the Yulin area.
