If you are heading to Jamaica, Montego Bay (or MoBay) is the easiest place to start since Sangster International Airport handles most of the international flights. It is known as the tourist capital of Jamaica for a reason. The vibe is a mix of high energy and relaxation. It is a popular spot for spring break crowds, but it also attracts cruise passengers who dock at the Montego Freeport terminal.
What makes MoBay distinctive is its history and its beaches. The city was once called Lard Bay or Bahia de Manteca because Spanish settlers exported hog butter from the hills. If you want to relax, go to Doctor's Cave beach. It has clear turquoise waters and is one of the most famous beaches on the island. For those arriving by sea, the Montego Freeport terminal is about 3 km south of town and offers a visitor information booth run by the Jamaica Tourist Board.
This destination is great for people who want easy logistics, duty free shopping, and classic beach days. While you are there, try local staples like jerk chicken or ackee and saltfish. Fly into Sangster International Airport (MBJ). It is located on the northwest part of the island and is very close to the city.

Once you land at MBJ, taxis are the most common way to get into town. If you are arriving by boat at Montego Freeport (which is about 3 km south of town), a taxi to downtown MoBay costs about US$10. There is also a shuttle bus from the cruise ship pier to the City Centre Shopping Mall for US$2 per person each way.
For getting around the city center, you can use the Montego Bay Metro municipal bus service for around J$100. They run routes from Greenwood, Sandy Bay, and Cambridge to the City Centre. Stick to walking on Gloucester Avenue because it has sidewalks and is lined with shops and hotels. Avoid walking in other areas as it may be less safe.
Since Montego Bay was named "Fair Weather Bay" by Christopher Columbus, the weather is generally reliable, but your experience changes based on when you fly into Sangster International Airport.
Peak Season: December to April This is the busiest time because people are escaping winter. You will find the most crowds at Doctor's Cave beach and the cruise line terminal. Prices for hotels and rentals are at their highest here, often costing 30% to 50% more than in the off-season. Temperatures usually sit between 75°F and 85°F. It is a great time to visit if you want perfect beach weather and don't mind the crowds.
The Sweet Spot: May to June and November These months offer a balance of good weather and lower costs. You can find better deals on duty-free shopping and accommodation. Temperatures climb into the mid 80s. It is quieter than the winter rush, making it easier to enjoy the turquoise waters without fighting for a spot on the sand.
Months to Avoid: August to October This is the height of the hurricane season. While you might find the lowest prices of the year, there is a higher risk of heavy rain and storms. Temperatures are hot and humid, often hitting 90°F. If you go, keep your plans flexible.
Practical Tips If you want to eat like a local, look for jerk chicken or oxtail stew. A casual meal at a local spot usually costs between $10 and $20 USD, while a sit down dinner at a resort will be higher. Spend time exploring the north shore and visiting the duty-free shops in the center of town. If you have time, look into the history of how the city got its name from "manteca," the Spanish word for lard.
