Karachi
Everything you need to know before you go.
Karachi is a loud, chaotic coastal city that does not try to be pretty for tourists. It is for people who like raw urban energy and do not mind heavy traffic. The vibe is fast and often overwhelming. You will see extreme wealth in DHA and Clifton right next to the old, crumbling buildings of Saddar. It is a place for the adventurous traveler who wants to experience a real megacity without the polish of a resort town.
Spend your time in Saddar to see the Empress Market and old colonial architecture. Visit the Mazar-e-Quaid for the scale of the white marble dome and the Mohatta Palace in Clifton for a bit of history. If you want a walk by the sea, head to Sea View, though it is mostly just sandy and crowded. Most of the high end shopping and cafes are concentrated in DHA.
The food is the main draw. You have to try Karachi Biryani and Bun Kababs from street stalls. For a heavy breakfast, get Nihari. Street eats cost about $1 to $5. A nice dinner in a DHA restaurant will run you $15 to $30. Transport is cheap via Uber or Careem, usually under $5 for most cross town trips.

Fly into Jinnah International Airport (KHI). You will not find a direct flight from the US. Most people fly from New York (JFK), Chicago (ORD), or Los Angeles (LAX) with a layover in Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul. Expect to pay between $1,100 and $1,600 for a round trip.
When you land, do not take a random taxi from the curb. Download Uber or Careem. These apps are the only way to ensure a fair price. A ride to the Clifton or DHA neighborhoods will cost between $12 and $20. Depending on traffic, it takes 40 to 60 minutes. Public transit from the airport is chaotic and not recommended for someone with luggage.
If you are coming from nearby cities like Hyderabad, you can drive. The trip takes about 3 hours. Trains are available, but they are often delayed and uncomfortable.
Stay in Clifton or DHA. These areas are safer and have better roads. If you want to see the old city, head to Saddar, but keep your belongings close.
For food, you have to try Karachi Biryani. A plate at a local spot costs $3 to $7. For breakfast, find a place serving Nihari, which is a slow cooked beef stew. It usually costs around $5. If you want a quick snack, try a Bun Kabab for about $1 to $2.
Visit Mazar-e-Quaid, the white marble mausoleum. It is the city's most famous landmark. Mohatta Palace in Clifton is also worth a visit for the architecture. If you go to Clifton Beach, expect it to be crowded and loud.
Budget about $40 to $80 per night for a decent hotel in a safe area. Street food is cheap, but stick to places with a high turnover to avoid getting sick.
If you want to visit Karachi, timing is everything. The city is massive and the heat can be oppressive if you pick the wrong month.
Peak Season: December to February This is the best time to go. Temperatures usually hover between 12°C and 25°C (54°F to 77°F). It is the only time of year when you can actually walk around neighborhoods like Saddar or visit the Empress Market without drenched clothes.
People flock here during these months for the mild weather. You will find the city is more active and the outdoor cafe culture in DHA and Clifton is in full swing. This is also the peak of wedding season. You will see incredible lights and decorations across the city, though traffic becomes a nightmare.
The Sweet Spot: October to November and March These months are your best bet for a balance of weather and cost. Temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The crowds are smaller than in mid-winter, and you can often find better deals on hotels in the Clifton area.
March is particularly good because the city is slightly greener before the summer heat kills everything. It is a great time to visit the Mohatta Palace or take a walk along the beach.
Months to Avoid: May to September Avoid this window if you can. Temperatures often climb above 35°C (95°F) and the humidity from the Arabian Sea makes it feel much hotter. June and July are brutal. Then you hit the monsoon season in August, which brings heavy rains that often lead to flooded streets and massive traffic jams. You will spend most of your time trapped in air-conditioned cars or malls.
