The Great European City Breaks Road Trip
A 14 day journey through six iconic capitals across Europe.
This road trip is for the adventurous traveler who wants to see the contrast between the Mediterranean coast and the gothic spires of Central Europe. Over 14 days, you will drive through six distinct cities, moving from the artistic streets of Spain through the heart of France, the history of the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary, and finally ending in the eternal city of Italy. It is a high mileage journey that balances fast paced city hops with slower, three day stays in the east.
Barcelona
Day 1
You start your trip in Barcelona, a city where sea, art, and market life mix together. You should spend your first day wandering through the narrow lanes of El Born. This is where you can find medieval walls standing right next to modern boutiques. After exploring the neighborhood, you can head over to the sandy stretch of Barceloneta for a quick dip in the water before the sun sets.
When it comes to food, the city is grounded in simple, honest dishes. You will want to visit Poble Sec to try a plate of bombas. If you prefer something lighter, head to a tiny bar in Gràcia for a glass of vermut, which usually costs under 5 Euros. For a quick caffeine fix, a coffee at a sidewalk café in the Gothic Quarter typically costs about 2 Euros. If you are looking for a full dinner, grilled sardines are a local favorite.
Where to eat: McDonald's Where to sleep: Hotel Millenni
Paris
Day 2
The Leg: The drive from Barcelona to Paris is approximately 831 km and takes about 9 hours.
Once you arrive in Paris, you will find it is a city you can actually walk through and still find something new around every corner. You should spend your time in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This neighborhood hums with cafés where you can sip a café au lait and watch the world drift by.
From there, take a short walk to the 5th arrondissement. These quiet, tree-lined lanes are filled with the scent of fresh baguettes coming from boulangeries that have been baking for generations. As night falls, you can watch the Seine glow under the bridges and witness the light show at the Eiffel Tower.
Where to eat: Uno Where to sleep: Ibis
Prague
Days 3 to 5
The Leg: The drive from Paris to Prague is approximately 883 km and takes about 10 hours.
You have three days to explore Prague, a city that feels layered over centuries. Start your visit in Žižkov, where you can wander down cobblestones and hear jazz trios playing in basement bars. To get a sense of the city's scale, cross the Vltava on the Charles Bridge. Here, you can look up at the gothic spires that have watched over the city for 600 years.
Spend some time in the Old Town square to see the hourly show of the Astronomical Clock and listen to the street musicians. When you need a break from the crowds, step a few blocks into Malá Strana. The vibe here shifts to quiet courtyards and a slower pace of life.
Where to eat: Legenda or McDonald's Where to sleep: Hotel Olšanka
Vienna
Days 6 to 8
The Leg: The drive from Prague to Vienna is approximately 251 km and takes about 3 hours.
In Vienna, you will see a balance of grandeur and everyday comfort. You should wander through the historic core of the Innere Stadt. While the area is grand, you can still find tiny coffee houses on side streets. Order a melange, which is half coffee and half milk with a dollop of foam, from a barista who knows exactly how you like it.
The streets are lined with 19th century façades, but the atmosphere remains relaxed. You can join the locals on the benches in the Volksgarten, reading a newspaper while pigeons peck at crumbs. For those interested in music, the Vienna Philha is the place to be.
Where to eat: Phönixhof Where to sleep: Bellevue
Budapest
Days 9 to 11
The Leg: The drive from Vienna to Budapest is approximately 214 km and takes about 2 hours.
Budapest is a city of layers. You can see this contrast when the grand boulevards of the 5th District give way to the narrow, graffiti splashed streets of the Jewish Quarter. A walk across the Chain Bridge at sunset provides the classic postcard view of the city.
For a more local experience, wander down to the Gozsdu Courtyard. This is where locals crowd into tiny wine bars to laugh over glasses of fröccs. You should also visit the thermal baths. The massive pools at Széchenyi are a landmark that makes you feel the scale of the city's bathing culture.
Where to eat: Trattoria Pomo D'Oro or Quí Where to sleep: Ikonik Parlament
Rome
Days 12 to 14
The Leg: The drive from Budapest to Rome is approximately 808 km and takes about 9 hours.
Your final stop is Rome, which feels like a living museum. You can spend your time wandering the narrow, ivy covered lanes of Trastevere. From there, move toward the center of the city to stand under the massive dome of the Pantheon and watch the sunlight slice through the oculus.
The city is loud, layered, and a little chaotic, which is part of its charm. For a quick and cheap meal, grab a slice of pizza al taglio on Via del Moro for about 4 Euros. If you want a sit down meal, find a tiny trattoria in Testaccio and order cacio e pepe, the traditional cheese and pepper pasta.
Where to eat: Giolitti or Sichuan Haozi Where to sleep: Residence Aldrovandi

How to adapt this trip
If you only have 10 days, you should cut the stops in Vienna and Budapest, or reduce the time spent in Rome and Prague to two days each. This will reduce the total driving time significantly.
If you have 21 days, you can add more time to Barcelona and Paris. Currently, these are very fast stops. Adding three to four days to each of these cities would allow you to explore more of their neighborhoods without the rush of a 9 or 10 hour drive the following morning.
