US Coastal Cities Flight Hop

A 14 day journey from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific.

TravelMe EditorialยทReviewed by Ryan Thayer

This trip is for the traveler who wants to see a wide variety of American coastal vibes without spending weeks in a car. You will move quickly between historic ports, tropical islands, and foggy metropolitan hills. The total duration is 14 days, and it is designed for those who enjoy a fast pace and frequent changes in scenery.

Charleston

Day 1

You start your journey in Charleston, South Carolina. This city feels like a walk through a well preserved 19th century town. You will find the streets lined with pastel houses and Spanish moss hanging from live oaks. The harbor provides great views of historic forts.

You should stay in the historic peninsula. This location makes it easy to walk to the Battery and Rainbow Row. If you enjoy boutique shops and art galleries, spend your time in the French Quarter near King Street. For a quieter experience, head to South of Broad.

For a meal, you can stop at East Bay Deli for a sandwich. When it is time to sleep, the Kings Courtyard Inn is a solid mid range choice.

St. Augustine

Day 2 Leg: Flight from Charleston (around 340 to 350 km)

Next, you fly to St. Augustine. This city feels like a living museum. You will see Spanish style architecture and 19th century brick streets. The downtown area is walkable and filled with narrow colonial lanes. You will find locally owned shops and restaurants that spill onto terraces overlooking the water.

You can wander past the Castillo de San Marcos, a fort that has never been captured. You should also pause at one of Henry Flagler's grand hotel buildings, which now houses a small liberal arts college.

You can eat at The Conch House Lounge. For your stay, the Marion Motor Lodge offers a budget friendly option.

Naples

Day 3 Leg: Flight from St. Augustine (around 410 to 430 km)

Your third stop is Naples. This is an ancient port on the Mediterranean that still feels like a living museum. You will find the historic centre is a maze of streets where Greek, Roman, Norman, Angevin, Spanish and French architecture sit side by side.

From the water, the view is striking. You can see a landscape that includes the volcanic cone of Vesuvius and the Royal Palace of Caser.

For your accommodation, you will want to stay at the Inn on 5th.

Fort Lauderdale

Day 4 Leg: Flight from Naples (around 160 to 170 km)

You then fly to Fort Lauderdale. This stop is a quick transition in your coastal tour. You can spend your day exploring the local area before heading to dinner.

You should eat at Yolo. For your overnight stay, Mary's Guest House is a budget option.

Miami Beach

Day 5 Leg: Flight from Fort Lauderdale (around 30 to 40 km)

Next, you visit Miami Beach, a barrier island built on former mangrove land. The city is split into three districts. You will likely spend most of your time at the southern end in South Beach, where you can see the famous stretch of sand and the Art Deco hotels that line Ocean Drive.

If you want a different atmosphere, head north to the quieter residential blocks or the commercial hub around Lincoln Road. Here, you can visit the Art Center at Lincoln Road for exhibitions and classes. You can also visit the Miami Beach Ch.

For dining, you can visit TGI Fridays. You will stay at the Palmer House.

Miami

Days 6 to 8 Leg: Flight from Miami Beach (around 5 to 10 km)

You will spend three days in Miami. This gives you more time to explore the city beyond the beach. You can spend your days wandering the city streets and sampling the local food scene.

When you are hungry, you should visit El Cartel Colombian Restaurant for Latin American food. For your stay, the Residences at Bayside by Elite City Stays is a mid range option.

Key West

Days 9 to 11 Leg: Flight from Miami (around 200 to 215 km)

Your next stop is Key West, where you will stay for three days. The island feels like a small town where the past and present live together. You will find the Old Town area around Duval Street is the most walkable part of the city, featuring pastel houses and narrow lanes.

You should also visit Bahama Village. This neighborhood still carries the rhythm of the Bahamian immigrants who helped build the early culture of the island.

For food, you can visit Kennedy Cafe or the Riviera Coffee & Sandwich Shop. You will stay at Santa Clara Condominiums.

San Francisco

Days 12 to 14 Leg: Flight from Key West (around 4090 to 4100 km)

The final leg of your trip is a long flight to San Francisco. This city is known for constantly rearranging itself.

You can start a morning in the Mission neighborhood. You will want to try a Mission style burrito from La Taqueria, which is a filling and slightly spicy meal. After that, you can hop on a historic cable car and climb up to Twin Peaks. This spot gives you a 360 degree view of the city as the fog rolls in.

You should also explore the different personalities of the neighborhoods. Visit the lantern lit alleys of Chinatown and the Italian influence of North Beach.

For dinner, you can eat at Woods Lowside. Your final stay will be at the Coast Hotel.

How to adapt this trip

If you only have 10 days, you can cut the stops in Naples and Fort Lauderdale. This allows you to keep the longer stays in Miami, Key West, and San Francisco while still seeing the East and West coasts.

If you have 21 days, you can add more time to Charleston and St. Augustine to slow down the start of the trip. You could also add extra days to San Francisco to explore the Mission and North Beach neighborhoods more slowly.
